Heartburn Is Most Common After Overeating.

Heartburn does not indicate heart malfunction but results from nervous tension or overindulgence in food or drink. The sensation is produced by spasmodic constrictions of the esophagus accompanied or occasioned by regurgitation of stomach acids, which spread upward into the throat, and may result in belching or vomiting. Heartburn is an uncomfortable but common feeling of burning or warmth in the chest . Although the pain of heartburn is felt in the chest, heartburn has nothing to do with your heart . The spectrum of diseases associated with GERD includes reflux esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus and nonerosive reflux disease.

Heartburn due to acid reflux disease needs strong heartburn medication . Heartburn is the most important symptom of GERD, but it's not the only one. Instead of a searing pain, some people have a sour taste in their throat (acid regurgitation). Heartburn occurs when the acid contents of the stomach pass backwards up into the food pipe (called the gullet or oesophagus). This is also known as stomach acid reflux.

Heartburn is also identified as one of the causes of chronic cough , and may even mimic asthma . Despite its name, heartburn actually has nothing to do with the heart. Heartburn has nothing at all to do with the heart. It occurs when acid from the stomach regurgitates, or backs up into, the lower esophagus, the tube connecting your mouth and stomach.

Heartburn is most common after overeating, when bending over or when lying down. Pregnancy, stress and certain foods can also make heartburn worse. Heartburn is even more common during pregnancy, with about 1 in 4 women reporting it daily at some point during their pregnancy. Statistics on acid indigestion are difficult to find because the definition is vague, but it's probably almost as common as heartburn. Heartburn actually happens if acid has gone in the wrong direction as, it goes to the esophagus instead of into the stomach.

Eating smaller meals, controlling your weight, avoiding tight-fitting clothes, and avoiding heavy lifting/straining are all ways of reducing heartburn. Don't lie down after meals, because that makes it easier for stomach contents (including acid) to back up into the esophagus.
