The liquids that is refluxing from the stomach contains more injurious acid and that creates the esophageal inflammations.

Acid reflux is unfortunately a chronic condition and once the treatment has begun then, it requires the same for the rest of the patients life. In many cases, the human body follows a sort of mechanism to protect it from acid refluxes and this is done by swallowing saliva which neutralizes the acid present in the stomach. During the day, most of us are active and upright which makes us swallow our saliva again and again which together with gravity makes the liquids from stomach fall back again without doing any damage to esophagus.

In the night, when most people are in deep sleep, there is an absence of gravity. The swallowing of saliva becomes common which collects a big amount of acid in esophagus and then it damages it the most. Acid reflux is caused by several different factors and it is not limited to only one single factor. The common signs of Acid reflux are nausea, heartburn and regurgitation. In the majority of the patients with the disease, the nerve stimulation creating heartburn is caused when acid refluxes back to the esophagus. This heartburn is felt in different ways in different patients. Because of the heartburn, some of the patients with acid reflux doesn’t have a good nights sleep.

Acid reflux leads to complications such as: Ulcer, coughing, asthma, inflammation of the throat, strictures and so on. An ulcer might appear when the acid from stomach reaches the esophagus and damages the cells. The word esophagitis refers to the neutralization of acid present in the esophagus and it is done by our human body to heal the damage caused to the esophagus. In many cases, if it is determined that the bleeding is rigorous, procedures such as blood transfusion or finally surgery might be necessary.

Usually acid reflux is found or suspected with its usual signs and it is then diagnosed with procedures such as biopsies, endoscopy, examination of the throat and larynx, esophageal acid testing, gastric emptying disease and so on.
